Formal dances held across the country for hikers and the people who staff homeless shelters — the hardest job in this fight, and the one nobody throws a party for.
All guests are requested to bring new, clean undergarments for homeless people as a donation. Some people refer to The Hikers Ball as the Underwear Ball.
Shelter workers do the work almost nobody else will. They handle the overnight shifts, the overdoses, the intake at 2 a.m., the person who comes back for the fourth time. They are underpaid, they burn out, and they are thanked almost never. We welcome all shelter workers, but we need firm RSVPs — so watch for your area.
The Hikers Ball is a formal night held in their honor. Like a prom. Not a fundraiser dressed up as a party — a party, for them, with the room on their side.
However, donations and company sponsorships would be greatly appreciated. The homeless crisis hits all ages, and for many different reasons. If you are not homeless and never have been, count yourself as fortunate — we could always use your monetary help.
Admission is free, and a donation of new underwear goes directly to shelters. It is the single most requested item at intake and one of the least donated. Everyone remembers the price of admission, which is exactly the point.
The Ball is meant to travel — held in different cities, honoring the shelter staff in each one. Dates and locations are announced as they are set.
